The day has arrived, and we begin our overnight journey from MIA to Greece.
For an additional $80 per person, Christian Expedition can arrange a round-trip ground transfer for travelers between Port Charlotte, FL and MIA.
Today we arrive in Greece at Thessaloniki Airport (SKG). Upon arrival we will transfer to our hotel. Overnight Thessaloniki. Holiday Inn or similar. D.
This morning we visit Kavala, which is biblical Neapolis, where Paul once landed with Timothy and Silas. We see the city’s Roman aqueduct and Acropolis before moving on to Philippi. We see the river where Lydia’s heart was opened by God to the Gospel (Acts 16:14), the Roman Forum, the theater, and the prison where Paul and Silas were held captive. Then it’s back to Thessaloniki, where we see sites like the old city walls and Roman market, and take in beautiful views of the city. Paul founded a church in Thessaloniki (biblical Thessalonica), to which he wrote the Epistles of 1st and 2nd Thessalonians. Overnight Thessaloniki. Holiday Inn or similar. B, D.
This morning we visit Veria (biblical Berea), where Paul and Silas went after they caused a riot in Thessalonica. We see the traditional location where Paul preached to the Bereans. We then continue our drive, arriving in Athens in the evening. Overnight Athens. Athens Avenue or similar. B, D.
This morning we drive to the port and board our cruise ship, where we will spend the next three nights. Our cruise’s first port of call will be Mykonos. We enjoy this picturesque island, with its excellent cuisine and shopping, before again boarding our cruise ship. Overnight aboard ship. B, L, D.
Today our ship brings us to Kusadasi, in Turkey. From here we transfer to the archaeological site of ancient Ephesus. Paul preached, taught, and lived in Ephesus for an extended period of time (Acts 19:1-10). We move on to the island of Patmos, where we visit the Monastery of St. John and the cave where it is believed that John received the visions that now constitute the book of Revelation. Overnight aboard ship. B, L, D.
This morning our cruise ship brings us to Heraklion, Crete. We will enjoy the port of Heraklion at leisure. You may wish to visit the old city walls, the Venetian style city hall, and the Koules Fortress. Our ship will then bring us to the island of Santorini, where you can walk or take a cable car up to the village of Fira. Santorini is known for its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and beautiful views. Overnight aboard ship. B, L, D.
After disembarking from our cruise ship, we make our way to the Peloponnese region. We visit Epidaurus, including the Temple of Asklepios, the Tholos, and the Theater (one of the best-preserved from ancient Greece). Epidaurus was associated with Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine, and was the home to the most popular healing center of antiquity. It provides insight into the healing cults of ancient Greece and Rome – and so also into the cultural backdrop against which the biblical healing miracles were performed. Finally, we visit Corinth, where we see sites like the Temple of Apollo, the Roman agora, the Bema courthouse (where Paul’s enemies brought him before Gallio in Acts 18:12), the pavement inscription of Erastus, the Roman Lechaion Road, and the lower Fountain of Peirene. Overnight Athens. Athens Avenue or similar. B, D.
Today we tour Athens. Making our way toward the Acropolis, we will see the Theater of Dionysius, perhaps the oldest theater in the world, and the impressive Odeon of Herod. At the Acropolis, we see the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, upheld by the famous sculpted female figures, the caryatids, and, of course, Athens’ most famous monument, the Parthenon. We will climb Mars Hill, where Paul preached his famous sermon in Acts 17 about the “unknown god.” We will also see the Ancient Agora of Athens, including the Temple of Hephestus. Overnight Athens. B, D.
This morning we will transfer to the airport in order to begin our journey back home. If time allows, breakfast is included today. Later today we will arrive back at MIA.
