Before you go

What Is a Christian Expedition?

And why so many travelers come home reading the Bible differently

A group trip to the places of the Bible, built around Scripture and led by your church. Here is what it is, what a day looks like, and where groups go.

A Christian expedition is a group trip to the places of the Bible, planned for a church or ministry and open to the people it invites. Each day you stand where the events of Scripture happened, read the passages there with your group, and learn the history from a guide who knows the sites well.

It looks like a tour from the outside: flights, hotels, a coach. What happens inside the days is different, and it is why so many people come home reading the Bible in a new way.

The definition

What makes it an expedition

  • The places are chosen for what happened there. Capernaum, the Southern Steps, Ephesus, Corinth. Each site is on the route because of a passage of Scripture, not because of the view.
  • The Bible is read on site. Most days include time to read the passage where it happened, and often a short teaching from your pastor or group leader.
  • It is a group. You travel with people from your own church or ministry. You eat together, sit through the same delays, and come home with the same memories.
  • Someone handles the logistics. A Christian Expedition tour director travels with the group, with licensed local guides at the sites, so the group leader is free to lead.
A typical day

What actually happens, day by day

Breakfast, then the coach. Most days start early. Many groups pray or read a psalm together as the coach pulls away.

The sites, with a guide who knows them. A licensed guide explains the history and the archaeology, and points out what the text says happened there.

Scripture where it happened. At the key sites the group stops to read and listen: the Beatitudes on the hillside above Galilee, Acts 17 on Mars Hill, Revelation 2 in the theater at Ephesus.

Time to take it in. Good itineraries leave space at the major sites for people to sit, pray or simply look.

Dinner together. Most days end with a group dinner at the hotel, where the group becomes a group. Your tour director goes over the next day before everyone heads off.

Worship and teaching

Baptisms, communion and teaching on site

Many groups share communion at the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, and many travelers are baptized in the Jordan River. Pastors teach on a boat on the Sea of Galilee, on the steps of the Temple, and in the ruins of the churches Paul wrote to. We arrange the places and the timing, and your group leader leads.

Where to go

Where a first expedition usually goes

  • Israel is where most churches start: Galilee, Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, usually in ten to twelve days.
  • Greece and Turkey follow Paul through Philippi, Athens and Corinth and visit the seven churches of Revelation.
  • Jordan and Egypt add Petra, Mount Nebo, the pyramids and Sinai.
  • Italy, the Reformation and the British Isles trace the church after the New Testament.

Every route we run is on our destinations page.

Before you ask

Common questions

How long is an expedition?

Most run nine to thirteen days. Israel is usually ten to twelve, Greece and Turkey ten to thirteen, and the Seven Churches of Revelation about eight.

What does an expedition cost?

Most church expeditions to Israel are priced between about $3,600 and $5,750 per person including group airfare, and Greece and Turkey from about $4,400 to $7,700. See what an expedition costs for what sits inside the price.

Do I need to be fit?

You need to walk a few miles across a day, manage steps and stand for stretches at a time. Ancient sites have uneven ground and few lifts. Tell us in advance about anything that affects your mobility.

Do I need to be a member of the church that is going?

No. Churches often invite family, friends and other congregations, and many travelers join a trip led by a church they do not attend. Ask the group leader, or call us.

Can I go on my own?

Yes. Many travelers join a group on their own. If you would rather not pay a single room supplement, we can try to pair you with a roommate.

How far ahead should a church plan?

About a year. Flights and the best hotels are the constraint. See our planning timeline or how leading an expedition works.
